PITTSFORD, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher College men's basketball had its seven-game winning streak halted on Thursday as the Cardinals fell on the road to Nazareth College, 75-67, in an Empire 8 tilt inside Kidera Gymnasium. The loss, which was Fisher's first since December 30, moved the Cardinals' record to 12-5 and 7-1 in the conference standings. Nazareth improved to 11-6, 5-3, respectively.
Fisher came out aggressively to start the game and built an eight-point lead just 3:31 into the contest on a layup from
Alex Sausville to make it 12-4 in the visitor's favor. The momentum temporarily shift to the Golden Flyers courtesy of a 10-2 run to knot the game at 14-14, but the Cardinals rallied with 10 unanswered points of their own highlighted by five from freshman
Sammy Robinson to open up a double-digit lead, 24-14, with 10:32 left to play in the opening half.
Nazareth continued to chip away and eventually captured the lead with one of its six 3-pointers of the half to make it 33-32. The lead would change hands four times over the next two minutes until the Golden Flyers used a 7-0 run to close out the first half with a 43-36 lead at intermission.
Fisher scored five quick points to start the second half and came to within two, 43-41, but the Golden Flyers countered with a 9-1 run including seven unanswered points to push their lead back to 10 points, 52-42, with 12:25 remaining in the game.
From there, Nazareth would extend its advantage to as many as 15 points after pounding the ball inside with seven layups. The Cardinals cut the lead to seven points with a 8-0 burst capped by an old-fashioned 3-point play from senior
Keegan Ryan to make it 68-61, but seven free throws down the stretch secured the win for Nazareth.
Sausville finished the game with a team-high 17 points on 6-of-11 shooting to go along with three rebounds and two assists. Ryan contributed 15 points and three rebounds while
Ryan Henderson added 11 points and eight rebounds in 25 minutes of action.Â
Tyler English had eight points and nabbed eight boards in the loss and
Jake Haight collected nine rebounds overall.
The Cardinals will look to begin a new winning streak at 4 p.m. on Saturday when they take on Ithaca College on the road in an Empire 8 pairing.
