The St. John Fisher College baseball team split a doubleheader with Stevens Institute of Technology at Dugan Yard this afternoon. The win in game one put the Cardinals in first place in the Empire 8 standings as they improved to 23-8 overall and 11-1 in conference play.
Stevens finished out the day going 21-13 and 11-4 in the Empire 8.
Senior starting pitcher
Stephen Lewis threw eight solid innings allowing two runs on seven hits, while fanning three to earn the win in game one for Fisher. He improved to 5-0 on the season.
Outfielder
Nate Roethel led all Cardinal hitters on the day as he tallied three hits, two coming in the first game.
Fisher is back home on Wednesday afternoon in Empire 8 Conference action as it faces Houghton College in a doubleheader starting at 2 p.m.
Game One (Conference): Fisher 6, Stevens 2
Fisher took an early 2-0 lead as they scored a run in the first and one in the fourth before the Stevens tied the game at two in the top of the sixth.
In the bottom of the seventh, Fisher reclaimed the lead from Stevens to make it a 5-2 game.
Malcolm Kelsey started the inning off with a single to center and then moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Roethel. A wild pitch put Kelsey 90-feet away. He scored on a fielder's choice by senior
Mike Roman.
Scott Eisenmenger and
Frank Carnevale walked back-to-back to load the bases for Fisher before centerfielder
Joe Simmons doubled down the left field line to score a pair of runs to give the Cardinals a three run lead.
Fisher tacked on one more run in the bottom of the eighth to make it a 6-2 final.
Simmons finished the game out, going 1-for-3 with two RBI and a walk to go along with his double. Teammates Victor Konstantinvosky and Roman combined three hits, a double, three RBI, a run scored and a walk.
As a team, the Cardinals had four doubles in the game.
Game Two (Non-Conferenec): Stevens 5, Fisher 0
Stevens plated a run in each of the first two innings to go up 2-0 before adding two runs in the eighth and a run in the ninth to close out the game.
Ducks' starting pitcher Zeph Walters went the distance as he threw a complete-game shutout to earn his fifth win of the season. He struck out six and scattered five hits, while facing 32 batters in the contest.
The Cardinals scattered five hits by four different players as Roethel paced all Fisher hitters in game two with two hits and a double. Simmons and Eisenmenger were the only two Fisher runners for the game to move into scoring position.
