The nationally-ranked St. John Fisher College women's lacrosse program improved to 5-0 on the year with a 12-6 win over host SUNY Oneonta on Tuesday. The victory marks just the second time in the 17-year history of women's lacrosse that the Cardinals have won their first five games, tying the mark for best start to season, set back in 2014.
Fisher, ranked 14th in the latest national coaches poll, never trailed in the game, with
Jordan Johnson scoring his 12th goal of the season less than four minutes into the game. With the game tied at 1-1 with less than 15 minutes left, junior-transfer
Jamie Wallace put the Cardinals up for good on a free position shot. The goal started a 4-0 run to the end the half, putting Fisher up 5-1 at the break and the Cardinals scored the first two goals of the second half to take a 7-1 lead.
With Fisher up 8-3 with just under 14 minutes left, freshman
Olivia Marziale scored back-to-back goals to put Fisher up seven, at 10-3.
The Red Dragons made things interesting, scoring three straight goals to make it 10-6 with just under five minutes to go. Senior
Sierra Badger, however, scored two goals in the final five minutes to put the game away.
Badger led the Cardinals with four points on three goals and one assist.
Cori Holbrook also scored three goals, while Johnson finished with three points on two goals and one assist.
Kaitlyn Agedal also scored for Fisher.
Morgan Young and
Kelsie Schindler each tallied three ground balls.
Abbie Reed, Holbrook and Wallace each won two draws.
Hayley Peets earned the win in goal, making two saves.
Fisher returns to action next Tuesday and will host William Smith College.
