The St. John Fisher College women's basketball program closed out the first quarter with a 19-2 run to take a 22-6 lead and never looked back, as the Cardinals earned their 19
th victory of the season with a 82-60 win over visiting Elmira College on Friday.
With the win, Fisher improves 19-3 overall and 12-1 in the Empire 8 Conference, while Elmira falls to 7-16, 4-10.
Elmira led 4-3 with just over five minutes left in the opening period, as the Cardinals started the game shooting just 1-of-8 from the floor. Fisher, would make seven of its next 10 shots to close out the quarter, including two field goals from
Bridget Carney, and 3-pointers from
Emily Piacentini,
Maria Kelleher and
Claire Walsh.
Fisher led 26-14 early in the second, but senior
Mary Kate Cusack scored eight of the game's next 10 points to put her team up 36-14, as the Cardinals took a 20-point lead for the remainder of the game.
Cusack led the Cardinals with 18 points and five steals, while Kelleher finished with 13 points, going 3-for-4 from beyond the arc.
Carney rung in with 11 points and four rebounds, and Piacentini finished with 10 points and three boards.
Fisher, currently ranked No. 5 in the NCAA Division III East Region, will return action at 4 p.m. on Saturday and will host Houghton College. A Fisher victory tomorrow would mark the second straight and the 29
th time in the program's history that the Cardinals have won 20 or more games in a season.
