Women's Basketball Breaks Century Mark In Win Over Medaille

The St. John Fisher College women's basketball program erupted for 101 points, including 40 points in the second quarter, as the Cardinals came through with a 101-65 win at Medaille College on Friday.

The 101 points are the most scored in a game by Fisher in a quarter-century. Fisher defeated City College of New York 106-24 early in the 1991-92 season. The 40 points scored in the second quarter are a new Fisher record as well (NCAA rules went from two halves to four quarters this year).

Eleven of Fisher's 12 dress players scored and no player saw more than 23 minutes of action.

It was a highly-contested game early on.

The Mavericks led by as many as 10 at 19-9 late in the first quarter, but the Cardinals came battling back and tied the game at 21s going into the second.

Fisher took the lead for good on the opening possession of the second quarter on two free throws from Mary Kate Cusack. It was a one-possession game at 34-31 with 6:30 left in the second, but the Cardinals pulled away over the next four minutes, thanks to a 20-0 run.

Maria Kelleher drained a 3-pointer in the closing moments of the half to put Fisher up 61-35 at the break.

The Cardinals, usually primarily reserved pushed its lead to as many 42 in the second half and went over the final century mark on put-back layup from Jessica Rhone, who finished with a career-high 12 points, in the final minute.

Cusack led the Cardinals with 17 points and tied her career high with eight steals. McKenzie Bezon finished with 11 points, seven boards and five assists.

Kelleher scored a career-high 15 points and knocked down three 3-pointers. Emily Piacentini chipped in with nine points, while Bridget Carney, Nicole Robinson, Caroline Robertson, Claire Walsh and Erin Hulbert each scored six in the win.

Fisher will return to action at 8 p.m. next Friday. The Cardinals, the reigning Empire 8 Conference champions, will open up conference play at Elmira College.
