In a matchup between two of the top team in the NCAA Division III East Region, the St. John Fisher College women's lacrosse program held on for a 14-13 win over host College at Brockport on Thursday. With the win, Fisher improves to 9-4 overall, while Brockport falls to 7-5. The Golden Eagles entered today's game ranked third in the latest NCAA regional rankings and No. 24 in the national coaches poll, while Fisher was ranked seventh in the regional rankings.
It was a back and forth game early on, with the contest tied at 1s, 2s, 3s, 4s and 5s before two straight goals from Brockport put the Golden Eagles up 7-5 with 17:54 left in the first half.
Brockport led 8-6 with under 10 minutes to go in the first, but Fisher scored the game's next six goals to take the lead for good.
The Cardinals led 10-8 at the half and sophomore
Jordan Johnson pushed her team's lead to 12-8 with two goals in the opening three minutes of the second half.
Danielle Falck put the Cardinals up 13-9 midway through the second half, while freshman
Morgan Young closed out the scoring for Fisher with a man-up goal with 4:11 left, extending her team's lead to 14-12.
Brockport scored with just under two minutes left to pull within a goal, but Fisher won the ensuing draw and kept possession for the remainder of the game.
Junior goalie
Nicole Hart earned the win in goal for Fisher, racking up 10 saves and allowing seven goals over the final 48 minutes.
Sierra Badger tallied four points on three goals and one assist, while winning three draws. Senior
Samantha Barton also scored three goals and won three draws.
Johnson finished with two goals and one assist, while senior
Lindsey Shoales chipped in with two goals, two draw controls and team-best two ground balls.
Falck finished with a goal and an assist, as did Young.
Chrissy Cook and
Erin Ward also scored for the Cardinals.
Abbie Reed led Fisher with five draw controls. The Cardinals finished the game 5-for-6 on free position shots, while Brockport was just 1-for-5 for the game.
Fisher returns to action at 12 p.m. on Sunday and will host Utica College. Prior to the start of the game, the College will honor its graduating seniors.
