The St. John Fisher College softball team split a non-conference doubleheader on Wednesday at SUNY Cortland, winning the opener 3-0 before falling 8-4 in the nightcap.

Fisher 3, Cortland 0Fisher took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning and chipped away later to earn the victory in Game 1.
Jennifer Knaak crossed the plate first for the Cardinals on an
Emma Savas single. Fisher held onto the one-run lead through the sixth inning when
Kate Disbrow singled to left field, bringing in pinch runner
Christina Sakran.
Meghan Burns capped off the offense with a solo home run to left center in the seventh inning. It marks her 12th career longball and the second of the season.
Knaak and
Danielle Ventrone both finished with two hits apiece to lead the offense.
Lindsey Thayer threw 11 strikeouts and allowed just two hits in the shutout.
Cortland 8, Fisher 4The Red Dragons put together a five-run fourth inning and never looked back to earn the victory.
Fisher took the lead once again in the first inning, tallying three runs on some short game plays from
Katie Mazierski and Burns.
The Cardinals added to their lead in the second inning when Burns continued her hitting streak on a single to shortstop, scoring
Kristina Balsano. The senior captain has now recorded a hit in each of the past 13 games.
Cortland erupted for runs in the fourth inning on three singles and a three-run home run. The Red Dragons added to their now 5-4 lead in the fifth inning on two doubles and a walk, making it an 8-4 game.
Lauren Owens led the Cardinals, going 2-for-4 with a RBI and run. Burns, Savas and
Karlie Neale added a RBI each.
Halie Schoff took the loss from the circle, allowing nine hits, eight runs (six earned) and four walks in five innings pitched.
Kayla DePara came in relief, striking out two and walking one in the sixth inning.
Fisher continues its series of away doubleheaders on Thursday when the Cardinals take on East Ave. rival Nazareth College at 3 p.m.
