Markarian Scores Four Goals As Field Hockey Blanks Nazareth

Freshman Emily Markarian continued to rewrite history for the St. John Fisher College field hockey program as she scored four goals in a 6-0 victory over host Nazareth College on Saturday.

Earlier this season, Markarian scored the first hat trick in the history of the four-year program at Fisher. Her four goals today is the new single game-high for Fisher field hockey. With 11 goals this season, the Orchard Park native is now tied with Elizabeth Cusack in scoring.

The Cardinals jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first five minutes of the game with goals from Markarian and Noelle Knox. Markarian opened the scoring in the third minute with Marissa Vedella earning the assist. Just two minutes later, Knox scored her first goal of the year with Vedella earning the assist again. She nearly scored a goal of her own in the 12th minute when her shot hit the post.

Fisher continued to dominate the offense with 14 shots in the first half and held the Golden Flyers to zero. Markarian scored her second goal of the day in the 29th minute to give Fisher a comfortable 3-0 lead going into halftime.

Markarian opened the second half with another pair of goals to add to Fisher's comfortable lead. Stacie Skidmore fed the forward a pass in the 42nd minute then the freshman took an unassisted goal just two minutes later.

Jessie Smyrski would score her first goal of the season in the 60th minute to push the Cardinals' lead to 6-0. Alexis Zakala earned the assist.

Danielle Famolaro made four saves in goal in 59 minutes in goal. Amanda Maciol replaced her in goal for the remaining 11 minutes.

Fisher improves to 9-3 on the year and 5-0 in conference play, while Naz falls to 6-10 and 2-4, respectively.

The Cardinals return to action at 5 p.m. Tuesday when they take on host St. Lawrence University for a non-conference game.
