Seven wasn't a lucky number for the St. John Fisher College baseball program on Friday night. Manchester College (IN) used seven hits to score seven runs in the top of the seventh inning, as the No. 7 Spartans rallied to
beat No. 4 Fisher 11-8 in the championship game of the winner's bracket of the NCAA Division III Mideast Regional in Marietta, OH.
With the loss, Fisher (31-11) will now play at 12 p.m. on Saturday in an elimination game. The Cardinals will face the winner of tonight's Adrian/Marietta winner. The winner of Saturday's game will face Manchester and would have to beat the Spartans twice to win the regional and advance to the NCAA Division III College World Series.
Fisher led 5-1 going into the top of the sixth and seemed to be in control. Manchester used three singles to score a run in the top of the sixth to make it 5-2, but broke it open in the seventh.
With the bases loaded and no outs, Tom Dybas relieved starter
Tim Johnson and got a force out at home on the first batter he faced. The next batter, however, hit a bases-clearing double to left center to tie the game up. The Spartans then used four more hits to score more runs and take a 9-5 lead. Manchester tacked on a run in both the eighth and ninth frames.
Fisher rallied in the ninth and scored three runs.
Peter Krysztof doubled down the line and scored on a single from
Ben Bostick.
Matt Klock then singled and both runners scored on a double to left from
Brad Rush. After an infield single from pinch hitter
Matthew Cahill sent the tying run to the plate with two outs,
Chris Roeder flied out to left to end the game.
Manchester got on the board first, using an error, a balk and two singles to score the game's opening run.
Fisher tied it up in the bottom of the second. Bostick led off the inning with a double to left-center and moved to third on a fly ball to right from Klock. Rush then singled through the left side to score Bostick.
The Cardinals batted through the order and scored four runs in the third. Roeder and Karnyski started the inning with back-to-back singles. Krysztof then bunted his way on with Roeder scoring from second on a throwing error by the pitcher.
Sean Osterman scored Karnyski on a sacrifice fly and then three-straight singles from Bostick, Klock and Rush pushed Fisher's lead to 5-1.
Bostick was 4-for-5 in the game with three runs. Rush also was 4-for-5 with three RBI. Klock picked up three hits, while Karnyski and Krysztof combined for three hits and three runs.
