D'Amato and Karnyski Lead to a Nightcap Victory in a Doubleheader

The St. John Fisher College baseball team split a doubleheader with Westminster College (PA) in Struthers, OH on Sunday afternoon. Both games featured outstanding pitching performances for the Cardinals despite the split. Fisher is now 10-3 on the year.

BOX SCORE – Westminster 2, Fisher 1

Despite a complete game from Jason Beaumont in which he only gave up two earned runs, Fisher was unable to generate enough run support to defeat Westminster.

The Cardinals opponent scored its only runs in the second inning when a single followed by a triple drove in a run. The runner on third later scored on a groundout to Chris Roeder at shortstop to put Westminster up for good.

Fisher did answer right back when Nicholas Flemister led off the third inning with a triple down the right field line. He scored on the very next batter as Steve Karnyski hit a sacrifice fly to plate Flemister. However, that was the only run the Cardinals could muster in the opening game of the doubleheader.

Beaumont went six innings, giving up seven hits and runs with only two walks while fanning four Westminster batters.

BOX SCORE – Fisher 9, Westminster 0

Pitcher Justin D'Amato dominated the Westminster lineup, striking out a career-high 14 batters while going the distance to earn the win, moving to 3-0 on the year. D'Amato walked only one batter and allowed just five hits in the seven innings.

Steve Karnyski also had an impressive performance, going 5-for-5, including a triple,  from the plate with four RBI and a run scored. Flemister was the other Cardinal to have multiple hits in the game, going 2-for-3 from the plate, crossing home three times in the outing.

The Cardinals stole seven bases in the nightcap, with Kanyski and Flemister each swiping two bags while Ben Ward, Ben Bostick and Peter Krysztof all took one. Bostick, who set the career-record for stolen bases at the College on Thursday, keeps adding to his totals, which sits at 42 in just his junior season.

Fisher scored three runs in the second and seventh innings, while getting one run in the fourth, fifth and sixth.

The Cardinals will get back to action at 3 p.m. on Wednesday for a matchup in Dugan Yard against The College at Brockport.
