Softball Pushes Winning Streak to Six Games

The St. John Fisher College softball team won both games of its doubleheader against SUNY Oswego on Wednesday.  Fisher defeated the Lakers 3-2 in the opener and won game two 7-2.  After starting the season off 1-9 in Arizona, the Cardinals have returned home and are now 10-12 on the year and have won six straight contests.  Fisher will host SUNY Brockport on Thursday for two more games.
In the first game, senior shortstop Sara Dresser (Medina/Medina) got the Cardinals going with a solo home run (her second of the season) to right center field for the game’s only run until the fifth inning.
Fisher added two more runs on a pair of RBI-singles from Dresser and Nicole Middleton (Hudson Falls/Fort Edward) in its half of the fifth to take a 3-0 lead.
The Lakers wouldn’t go down without a fight however, and cut the Fisher lead down to one run with two runs in their final at bat, but junior Amanda Shevchuk (Fayetteville-Manlius/Manlius) induced a fly out to end the game.  Shevchuk picked up her fourth win of the year and gave up six hits, while fanning four.
The Cardinals hit three home runs to earn a 7-2 victory and extended their win streak to a season-best six games.  After the Lakers tied the game at one with a solo home run in the top of the second, Samantha Vara (Hamburg/Boston) broke the tie with a lead off home run in the third to give Fisher a 2-1 lead.
Fisher kept things rolling in the fifth, as Kristi Bradley (Dansville/Dansville) homered to lead off the inning, and freshman McKenzie Cinelli (Emporia/Emporia, KS) hit a two-run shot to left, pushing the Cardinals’ lead to five runs at 6-1.
Vara went 3-for-3 with three runs scored, and batted in a run to lead the Cardinals, while Laura Rojek (Orchard Park/Orchard Park) (2-for-3) and Nicole Watkins (Canastota/Canastota) (2-for-4) each picked up two hits in the win.
Melissa Blakeney (Vestal/Vestal) pitched all seven innings and picked up her team-leading sixth win.
