The St. John Fisher College baseball team swept the doubleheader over visiting SUNY Fredonia on Wednesday. With the two wins, Fisher improves to 14-3-1 overall. The Cardinals will return to action on Saturday and will host Clarkson University.
Fisher scored the game’s final eight runs to pull away. With the game tied at 2-2 in the bottom of the fifth inning,
Kevin Wing (Webster Schroeder/Webster) hit a two-run single to give the Cardinals the lead for good. In the sixth inning, Fisher tacked on six runs, including two-run triples from both
Marc Montesano (New Hartford/New Hartford) and
Bob Toland (Caledonia-Mumford/Caledonia).
Ross Langevin (Liverpool/Liverpool) finished with a career-high four hits and scored two runs. Senior
Dave Roth (Churchville-Chili/Rochester) went 2-for-3 with two RBI, while classmate
Chad King (C.W. Baker/Plainville) went 1-for-2 with a run and an RBI.
Jason Nevada (Greece Arcadia/Rochester) and
Dave Convertini (Williamsville East/Williamsville) each picked up hits in the win. Pitcher
Andrew Van Slyke (Vernon-Verona-Sherrill/Rome) was one out away from pitching a complete-game. The sophomore struck out three and raised his record to 2-1 on the season.
Fisher handed the ball over to
Dan Jurik (Vestal/Vestal) who gave up three earned runs in six innings as the Cardinals defeated Fredonia 6-3.
Justin Lutes (Charles O. Dickerson/Trumansburg) earned his fifth save of the season tying the Fisher single season record. The Cardinals started off the scoring in the second inning with
Roth singling to center and
Jon Gibbs (Pittsford Southerland/Pittsford) hitting a home run to left center.
Fisher picked up three runs in the bottom of the sixth to push the lead to 6-3.
Chad King (C.W. Baker/Plainville) reached based on a throwing error while
Roth was intentionally walked to put two on for the Cardinals.
Gibbs then singled to center to score
King.
Roth scored on an RBI single by
Toland who picked up two RBI in the game.
Casey Jenkins (Honeoye Falls/Honeoye Falls) entered the game to pinch run for
Gibbs and scored on a single by
Michael Armstrong (Penfield/Rochester).
