The St. John Fisher College softball team split with SUNY Cortland in a rainy Saturday afternoon doubleheader. Fisher lost the first game of the doubleheader
1-0 in eight innings, and finished the day with a
6-2 win over the Red Dragons in a rain-delayed game. The Cardinals end the regular season with a 20-18 overall record and a 9-4 mark in the Empire 8 Conference. Fisher earned the No. 2 seed in this weekend’s Conference Championship, and will return to action on Friday to face the second-seeded Alfred Saxons at Ithaca College.
Game One – Cortland 1, Fisher 0 (eight innings)
Fisher’s
Amanda Shevchuk (Fayeteville-Manlius/Manlius) pitched a gem for the Cardinals, giving up just one hit and no earned runs through seven, but was tagged with the loss after an error scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the eighth. Fisher had a chance to plate a run in the top of the inning, but failed to score a runner from third with one out. The extra-inning rule placed Cortland’s
Crystal Carlson on second base to start the bottom of the inning. A bunt by
Brooke Weidman advanced
Carlson to third, with a throwing error by the Cardinals leading directly to the game’s only run.
Game Two – Fisher 6, Cortland 2
In the finale of the doubleheader, Fisher showed its offensive prowess with 10 hits leading to six runs.
Shevchuk pitched her second complete game of the day, and earned a win in the nightcap with just two earned runs allowed. Freshmen catcher
Jamie Harmon (South Portland/South Portland, ME) led Fisher at the plate, going 3-for-3 with a double and an RBI, while
Kelly Hausler (Colonie/Niskayuna) and
Kristi Bradley (Dansville/Dansville) each picked up two hits.
