Women's Hoops Soars to Victory Over Elmira

Allison Boehm (left) and Mary Kate Comfort combined for 44 points and 22 rebounds in Fisher's win over Elmira.
The St. John Fisher College women’s basketball team improved to 11-7 overall, 6-3 in the Empire 8 with a 71-62 win over host Elmira College on Friday night.

Senior forward Allison Boehm (Sacred Heart/Cheektowaga) paced the Cardinals to victory with her ninth double-double of the season, recording a game-high 27 points, and 15 rebounds.  Two other starters also finished in double figures, with Mary Kate Comfort (Orchard Park/Orchard Park) (17 points, seven rebounds) and Colleen Maloney (Liverpool/Liverpool) (11 points, eight rebounds) each contributing in the win.

The Cardinals got off to a slow start, and the Soaring Eagles took advantage, building up a six-point advantage (15-9) over the opening 6:46 of the contest, thanks in large part to a swarming defense that forced six Fisher turnovers over the same span.  Fisher fought back however, taking a 20-19 lead, its first in the game since the early moments, on an 11-4 run with 7:55 remaining in the half.

Elmira gained a three-point lead (26-23) off of a 3-point basket with nearly six minutes to play from Kourtney Troutman, but the Cardinals answered back, taking command, and building a seven-point lead with a 12-2 run over the next four minutes.  The run was highlighted by a trio of free throws from Boehm, who was fouled on a shot behind the arc, and a pair of baskets in the paint from Lyndsay Murphy (Hornell/Almond) and Mary Kate Comfort (Orchard Park/Orchard Park).  The Cardinals held a 37-32 advantage at the half.

Fisher began the second half the same way that it closed out the first, building its lead up to 10 points behind a 3-pointer from freshman Maloney five minutes into the half.  The visiting Cardinals pushed their lead to 15 points on a lay up at the 8:04 mark from Comfort and maintained a comfortable lead for the remainder of the game.

Fisher will return to action Tuesday at 6 p.m. to host East-Avenue rival Nazareth College in an Empire 8 Conference match up.
