The St. John Fisher College basketball team fell to visiting SUNY Brockport 88-87 in the opening round of the JPMorgan Chase Scholarship Tournament. Brockport led by seven points with 40 seconds left, but the No. 5 Cardinals stormed back and cut the lead to one point on a 3-pointer from Matt Newman with 2.3 seconds left. Fisher stole the ball off the in-bounds pass, but a 25-foot 3-pointer from the left side from Mike McKeever caromed off the glass as the horn sounded.
Fourth-seeded Brockport trailed by 10 at 45-35 at intermission, but got back in the game with an 8-0 run, thanks to four Fisher turnovers in a 44-second span early in the second half.
Brockport took its first lead since the opening moments at 59-58 with 12:06 left and took the lead for good on a layup from Sherod Harris with 7:39 remaining. Harris was clutch for the Golden Eagles, going 10-for-10 from the foul line (6-for-6 in the final 41 seconds) and finished with a game-high 23 points. Cantrel Parrish and Brandon Williams each finished with 17 points for Brockport (5-4).
Chris Baltz led Fisher (5-5) with 22 points, while Newman tied his career-high with 18 points, seven assists and four steals.
Brockport will play host Rochester at 8:15 p.m. in the tournament’s semifinals on Friday, while Fisher will face Keuka at 3:30 p.m. on Friday in a consolation game.
