Host Hartwick College stunned fifth-ranked St. John Fisher College in an Empire 8 Conference football matchup, as the Hawks defeated the Cardinals 31-28 on Saturday night.
With the loss, Fisher falls to 4-1 overall and 1-1 in the Empire 8 Conference. The loss snaps a 10-game regular-season road-winning streak, dating back to a 41-35 overtime-loss at Ithaca College in 2005. Hartwick, who stands at 2-0 in the Empire 8, is now 3-1 overall.
In a game that the Cardinals never led in, Fisher nearly pulled out a win in the final seconds, only to be stopped, just a few feet short of a go-ahead score.
With the game tied at 28-28, Hartwick took the lead for good on a 40-yard field goal with 4:15 left.
On the Cardinals’ final drive of the game, Fisher drove to inside the Hartwick 3, converting on two fourth-down plays during the drive, but with 13.5 seconds left, after a Hartwick timeout, the Cardinals opted out of attempting a 20-yard field goal and went for it, only to be stopped short on a quarterback sneak by Fisher’s
Tommy Hammel on fourth down.
