Third-seeded St. John Fisher College eliminated No. 6 Skidmore College with a 9-1 win on Thursday night in the New York Regional of the NCAA Division III Baseball Championship at Falcon Park in Auburn.
With the win, Fisher improves to 28-12. It is the most wins in a season in the program’s 20-year history. Fisher will now face top-seeded SUNY Cortland, ranked third nationally, at 3:30 p.m. on Friday in another elimination game for both teams. Cortland, ranked third nationally, lost to fifth-seeded Trinity (CT) 2-1 in 13 innings in Thursday's third game.
Pitcher Greg McKeown allowed just four hits over eight innings and one unearned run. The junior right-hander held the Thoroughbreds hitless through 5 2/3 innings before allowing a two-out double.
Freshman Marc Montesano led the Cardinals’ offensive attack, going 4-for-4 with three runs and three RBIs. Matt Bennage added three hits, while Jeff Fetzner and Chris Botsford each scored two runs.
Fisher jumped out a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning, capitalizing on three Skidmore errors, and never looked back. The Cardinals added one run in the third, four in the sixth and one in the ninth.
