The St. John Fisher College women’s lacrosse team overcame a five-goal deficit to earn its third-straight overtime win, as the Cardinals defeated previously undefeated SUNY Geneseo 13-12 on Tuesday at Fisher’s Growney Stadium.
Fisher took an early lead on a goal from senior
Theresa Nobilski (Brighton/Rochester) just 88 seconds into the game, but the Blue Knights scored five unanswered goals, and six of the next seven goals, to take a commanding 7-2 lead with eight minutes left in the first half. The Cardinals, however, refused to let the game slip away, and went on a 4-0 run over the final seven minutes of the opening period, cutting the lead to 7-6, behind the first goals of the season for
Caitlin Navor (Brighton/Rochester) and
Megan Geatrakas (C.W. Baker/Baldwinsville).
Geneseo (3-1) built the lead back up to three goals in the second half, but Fisher rallied yet again, and scored a pair of goals to bring the score to 9-8. After exchanging goals, Nobilski went to goal alone to record her third goal of the contest, and tied the game at 10, midway through the second half.
The two teams battled back and forth, with freshman goalie Vicky Sahm (Bishop Ludden/Baldwinsville) recording two saves over the next eight minutes of action, but Geneseo scored a goal on a free-position shot with just 1:09 remaining in the game.
After a timeout and critical draw control by
Haley Koperski (Brighton/Rochester), Fisher’s
Katie Glavin (Corcoran/Syracuse) assisted younger sister
Lauren Glavin (Corcoran/Syracuse) on a scoring combination to tie the game with just 8.3 seconds left to play in regulation.
In the overtime, freshmen
Ashley Fenyn (Newark/Newark) and
Trish Scudder (Corning East/Beaver Dams) each scored a goal. Geneseo pulled with one with 1:46 left, but never got any closer.
Nobilski finished the game with three goals and two assists. She also totaled nine ground balls and forced three turnovers, as did
Navor.
Koperski recorded one goal and two assists.
Kate Glavin also tallied three points, on two goals and one assist, and
Laurie Quackenbush (Penn Yan/Penn Yan) added a goal and an assist and a team-high six draw controls.
The Cardinals (4-2) will return to action at 4 p.m. on Friday to take on host Hartwick College.
