Baseball Takes Two Against Utica

Threes were wild on Sunday, as #33 Ricky Palmiero went 3-for-3 with three runs and three RBIs to lead to Fisher to a win in the weekend's third game.
The St. John Fisher College baseball team went 3-1 in its four-game series against Utica College over the weekend.
 
After losing the first game 5-2 on Saturday, the Cardinals bounced back and won the final three games, pounding out 45 hits in the three victories.  Fisher (17-9 overall, 7-5 Empire 8), won 18-3 in Saturday’s second game and swept Sunday’s doubleheader, defeating the visiting Pioneers 9-2 and 13-5.
 
Mike Palermo (Spencerport/Spencerport) started in all four games and went 6-for-10 with five runs and four RBIs.   Chad King (C.W. Baker/Plainville), Chris Botsford (C.W. Baker/Baldwinsville) and John Quartironi (Williamsville East/Williamsville) also started in all four games.  King batted 6-for-11 (.545) with three doubles, three runs scored and four RBIs, while Botsford went 5-for-12 (.417) with four runs and four RBIs.  Quartironi drove in a team-high seven runs over the four games.  The freshman’s best collegiate game came in Saturday’s win, as the outfielder went 4-for-5 with four RBIs and three runs scored.
 
Senior Ricky Palmiero (Bishop Kearney/Rochester) went 3-for-3 with three runs scored and three RBIs, including a two-run homer, in Sunday’s first game. Freshman Kevin Wing (Webster Schroeder/Webster) played in all four games and batted .625 (5-for-8) with four runs, two RBIs and two stolen bases. 
 
In Saturday’s 18-3 win, freshmen Jared Tiffin (Vernon-Verona-Sherrill/Sherrill) and Jason Nevada (Greece Arcadia/Rochester) each went 2-for-2 with two RBIs.  David Roth (Churchville-Chili/Rochester) finished 3-for-3 in Sunday’s nightcap.
 
The Fisher pitching staff, which entered the game with the lowest ERA in the nation, allowed 12 earned runs in the four games.
 
Freshman pitcher Andrew Van Slyke (Vernon-Verona-Sherrill/Rome) earned his first career win, pitching five innings, while scattering seven hits and striking out four in Fisher’s 13-5 win on Sunday. 
 
King improved to 5-1 on the mound, going 5.2 innings and allowing just one earned run in Fisher’s 9-2 win on Sunday.  In Saturday’s 13-5 win, freshman Dan Jurik (Vestal/Vestal) raised his record to 4-0, allowing just one run over five innings.
 
Fisher will play its next five games against University of Rochester.  The Cardinals will host the Yellowjackets at 4 p.m. on Tuesday for one, nine-inning game.  On Wednesday, Fisher will play a doubleheader at Rochester, and on Friday, Rochester will return to Fisher for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
