The St. John Fisher College women’s lacrosse team had a College-record seven-game winning streak snapped against visiting East Avenue rival Nazareth College on Friday, falling 10-7 in overtime. With the win, Nazareth, who scored the game's final four goals, wins the Empire 8 Conference regular-season title and will host the Conference Championship in two weeks.
The Cardinals opened up the scoring at the 20-minute mark of the first half on an unassisted goal from senior
Theresa Nobilski (Brighton/Rochester). Nazareth tied the game midway through the opening period, but
Laurie Quackenbush (Penn Yan/Penn Yan) and freshman
Ashley Fenyn (Newark/Newark) scored two of the games next three goals to give the Cardinals a 3-2 lead at halftime.
The two teams battled back and forth before attacker
Haley Koperski (Brighton/Rochester) increased the Fisher lead to two goals six minutes into the second half. Over the next 12 minutes of game action, the Golden Flyers fought back and scored three straight goals, including two free-position goals, scored just 16 seconds apart, to give Nazareth a 5-4 lead midway through the final period in regulation.
With just over six minutes to play,
Koperski recorded her second goal of the game to tie the score at five, but Nazareth regained the lead two minutes later. The Cardinals trailed for just 10 seconds, as
Jen Springett (Newark/Newark) scored the final goal in regulation that knotted the score up at six goals apiece with 4:32 remaining.
The Cardinals took a 7-6 lead two minutes into the first of two overtime periods, as
Ramona Walters (Corcoran/Syracuse) went to goal alone, but Nazareth scored two goals in the last 14 seconds of the first overtime period, and added two more goals in the final overtime period to improve to 6-0 in Empire 8 Conference play.
Koperski tallied two goals in the game, while Fenyn recorded two points on one goal and one assist. Nobilski and Quackenbush each recorded a goal and two ground balls, while attack/midfielder Springett added another goal and scooped up a team-high three ground balls.

Danielle Murphy (Skaneateles/Skaneateles) recorded five saves, while freshman
Vicky Sahm (Bishop Ludden/Baldwinsvile) stopped three shots in 33 minutes of action.
The Cardinals (9-3, 5-1 Empire 8) will return to action at 1 p.m. on Saturday to take on the visiting RIT Tigers.
