The St. John Fisher College women’s lacrosse team set a new program record with its seventh consecutive victory, as the Cardinals came through with a 14-7 win on the road against Elmira College on Sunday. With the win, the Cardinals locked up a spot in the four-team Empire 8 Conference Championship, marking the program’s sixth straight postseason bid.
The Cardinals didn’t waste any time setting the tone for the game, as
Lauren Glavin (Corcoran/Syracuse) opened up the scoring with an unassisted goal just 23 seconds into the contest. Fisher built the lead up to two goals, but the Soaring Eagles rallied to score three of the game’s next four goals to tie the game at 3-3 midway through the first half.
After two minutes of scoreless action,
Katie Glavin (Corcoran/Syracuse) assisted
on a
Laurie Quackenbush (Penn Yan/Penn Yan) goal to give Fisher a 4-3 lead. Over the next 14 minutes of game time,
Katie Glavin recorded three more assists in a five-goal run for the Cardinals, who took an 8-4 lead into the intermission.
Fisher opened up the second half with another quick goal, this time just 26 seconds in, from senior midfielder
Theresa Nobilski (Brighton/Rochester). Five minutes later, Fisher added two goals scored just 10 seconds apart to build an 11-4 lead. Following an Elmira free-position goal, the Cardinals went on their second three-goal run of the game.
Haley Koperski (Brighton/Rochester) and
Trish Scudder (Corning East/Beaver Dams) each scored their third goal of the game in the run, while
Quackenbush capped off the Cardinals’ scoring with an unassisted goal with just five minutes to play.
Lauren Glavin finished with a game-high five points on two goals and three assists, while sister
Katie Glavin recorded a career-high four assists in the win.
Nobilski,
who won five draw controls, and freshman
Ashley Fenyn (Newark/Newark), recorded one goal and one assist each, while midfielders
Jen Springett (Newark/Newark) and
Caitlin Navor (Brighton/Rochester) also scored in the win.
Fisher goalies
Danielle Murphy (Skaneateles/Skaneateles) and
Vicky Sahm (Bishop Ludden/Baldwinsville) each played a half and made four saves.
Fisher (9-2 overall, 5-0 Empire 8) will return to action at 4 p.m. on Friday and will host East-Avenue-rival Nazareth College in a match up of the Empire 8’s top teams.
