Women's Basketball Wins Season Opener

The St. John Fisher College women’s basketball program won its 33rd straight season opener in the program’s 34-year history, as the Cardinals cruised to a 78-48 win over visiting York College (NY) in the Courtyard-Penfield Invitational on Friday.

With the win, Fisher, the all-time winningest program in NCAA Division III advances to Saturday’s finals and will play Lycoming College at 3 p.m., while York will face University of Pittsburgh-Bradford at 1 p.m. Lycoming defeated Pitt-Bradford 76-54 in today’s earlier matchup.

Fisher trailed 4-3 early on, but used a 22-1 run over an eight-minute span midway through the first half to pull away.  Sophomore Mary Kate Comfort led all scorers with 12 points and seven rebounds – all in the first half, while senior Allison Boehm added 11 points and six boards.

Freshman starting guards Lyndsay Murphy and Stephanie Sweeney made memorable collegiate debuts.  Murphy totaled nine points and seven assists, while Sweeney finished with seven points and six steals, including five steals in the first six minutes of the game.
