Mark VanMarter (Liverpool/Liverpool) of the men’s track and field team has been named the College’s Male Athlete of the week.

The senior claimed just the second individual national championship in the college’s history, and the first ever championship for the track and field program this past weekend at the NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field Championships in Birmingham, Alabama.

VanMarter started off the championship jumping a 6.85 meter mark in the preliminary round to send him to the finals portion of the competition sitting in eighth place.

The Liverpool native would then blow his competition out of the water in the finals, jumping a monstrous 7.36 meters to capture the national title. The jump also earned him All-American honors in the event.

This national accomplishment has only been claimed once before when Scott Harris Jr. won it in golf in 2008.

The Cardinals return to the track on Saturday, March 31st to kick off the outdoor season, as the team travels to SUNY Geneseo.
