Emily Markarian of the field hockey team has been named the St. John Fisher College Female Athlete of the Week for the week ending on November 7, 2016.
Markarian had three of the Cardinals’ four goals in the Empire 8 Championship hosted by Fisher over the weekend, helping the team capture its first ever Empire 8 title. Her performance also garnered her the title of the tournament’s Most valuable Player.
In the semifinal game against the fourth-seeded ducks of Stevens, Markarian opened up the scoring with a goal 12:31 into the game. Tied 1-1 at the end of regulation, the teams were set for a golden-goal overtime period. It was here that Markarian, with help of a precise long pass from Gabby Laforce, found herself in on-on-one with the opposing goaltender. Markarian made no mistake, deking the netminder and putting the ball in the back of the net, sending Fisher to the Conference Championship final.
In the final, the Orchard Park native shined again, scoring the eventual gamewinner in the 55th minute. Markarian beat two defenders and slid the ball into the back of the net to give the Cardinals a two-goal lead. Her score would hold as Fisher eventually took down the second-seeded Washington and Jefferson College Presidents 2-1.
Fisher is now set to compete in the program’s first ever NCAA Championship, hosting Rhodes College (15-2) at Growney Stadium on Wednesday. Time for the contest is still yet to be determined.
