Demarre Nelson of the St. John Fisher College football team has been named the Male Athlete of the Week for the week ending on September 18, 2016.
Â
Nelson was also selected as the Empire 8 Conference Football Defensive Player of the Week.
Â
On Saturday, Fisher defeated No. 15 ranked SUNY Cortland 31-24 on the road in its Empire 8 Conference opener.
Nelson sealed the win for the Cardinals with his defensive efforts, making two red-zone interceptions in the final three minutes of the game.
A Cortland touchdown in the fourth shortened the Fisher lead to 31-24, and after the Cardinals went three-and-out on the next possession, Nelson made his first career interception at his own 7-yard line with 3:08 remaining to preserve the lead.
Cortland had possession in the final minute of play, but Nelson intercepted again, this time at the Fisher-17 with just seven seconds left on the clock.
The Cardinals return to action this Saturday for their mid-season bowl game, Courage Bowl XII, a game dedicated to children of Camp Good Days and Special Times, which will be hosted by the College at Brockport.
