PITTSFORD, N.Y., March 16, 2015 – St. John Fisher College’s Devin Cornelius (Clinton/Deansboro) of the men’s track and field team has been named as the College’s Male Athlete of the Week for the week ending March 15, 2015.

Cornelius became Fisher’s first All-American in track and field on Saturday by placing fifth overall in the heptathlon at the NCAA Division III Men’s Indoor Track and Field Championship at the JDL Fast Track in Winston-Salem, N.C. It also marks the first time that the program has accumulated points at the national meet.

The junior finished the two-day, seven-event competition with a total of 5,093 points to set a new school record.

Cornelius completed the first day’s events in fourth place, setting career-best marks in three of the four events. He started the meet with a fifth-place finish in the 60-meter dash with a career-best time of 7.12 seconds. He moved up to fourth place overall with a personal record of 6.62 meters in the long jump, before making his way up to third place overall with a throw of 11.52 meters in the shot put. Cornelius closed out the day with a personal-best mark of 1.88 meters in the high jump, giving him 2,842 points, just six points shy of third place overall.

Cornelius fell to fifth place in the beginning of Day 2 with a personal-best time of 8.80 seconds in the 60-meter hurdles. He then broke his own school record in the pole vault, clearing the bar at 4.25 meters. He locked up fifth-place and four points for the Cardinals with a time of 2:49 in the 1,000 meters.

The Cardinals move onto the outdoor season, beginning with Hamilton College’s Continental Invite on March 28.
