St. John Fisher College’s Mary Kate Cusack (Shenendehowa/Clifton Park) of the women’s basketball team has been selected as the College’s Female Athlete of Week for the week ending March 1, 2015.
Cusack was also tabbed as the Empire 8 Conference Women’s Basketball Player of the Week and Most Valuable Player for the Empire 8 Conference Championship.
In a 2-0 week for the Cardinals, Cusack averaged 32.5 points, 6.0 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 2.5 steals, while shooting 53.8% from the floor, including 12-of-24 from 3-point range.
Cusack tallied 24 points in Friday’s win over second-ranked Stevens Institute of Technology in the Empire 8 Championship semifinals. She shot 9-of-16 from the floor and added three steals in the win.
The nursing major came back on Saturday and enjoyed the best game of her career, scoring a career-high 41 points in an 86-84 overtime-win at top-seeded Ithaca College to help Fisher win its first Empire 8 Conference Championship since 2006. With the victory, Fisher has earned an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Championship and will return to action on Friday at a site and time to be determined.
Cusack tied the Fisher single-game record for 3-pointers with eight for the second time in her career, and came one point away from tying the single-game scoring record (42 points have been scored twice in Fisher’s 41-year history).
Cusack drained a 3-pointer to force overtime. She finished the contest with seven rebounds and four assists.
For the season, Cusack leads Fisher in scoring (17.7 points per game), steals (87), assists (68) and 3-pointers made (70).
