St. John Fisher College’s Devin Cornelius (Deansboro/Clinton) has been named the College’s Male Athlete of the Week for the week ending March 9, 2014.
Cornelius captured Fisher’s first-ever ECAC Championship in track and field on Saturday in Boston, qualifying for the NCAA Championships.
He won the heptathlon with a personal-best 4,951 points, taking first place in the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.17, as well as the 1000-meter race in 2:42.78, and in the pole vault, clearing a height of 4.15 meters.
The sophomore also tied for first place in the high jump and placed fourth in the shot put to earn valuable points toward the title.
Cornelius, currently ranked 10th in the nation in heptathlon, will travel to Lincoln, Nebraska this weekend to compete in the NCAA Championships, while the rest of the Fisher track and field team will return to action on March 28-29 when they travel to Washington & Jefferson College to begin the outdoor season.
