St. John Fisher College’s Portia Velasco (Vallejo, CA/Carondelet) of the women’s basketball team has been named as the College’s Female Athlete of the Week for the week ending December 8, 2013.
The junior guard averaged 21 points and 3.6 steals in a 2-1 week for the Cardinals in the Wendy’s College Classic. Fisher earned a third place finish after defeating the University of Rochester 72-60 on Saturday. Velasco had a game high 33 points, including a Wendy’s College Classic record 18 free throws (18-20) in the win over second-seeded U of R.
Fisher defeated Roberts Wesleyan in the opening game Tuesday, 73-51, with Velasco pouring in 13 points.
The Cardinals fell in the semifinals to Roberts Wesleyan 64-60 on Thursday. Velasco chipped in 21 points (8-17), 9 rebounds, and five steals.
The Cardinals (6-3) will return to the hardwood January 3rd at 8 p.m. against Houghton College to open up Empire 8 play.
