St. John Fisher College’s Devin Cornelius (Clinton/Deansboro) of the men’s track and field team has been named as the College’s Male Athlete of the Week for the week ending February 24, 2013.
Cornelius and the rest of the Cardinals took part in the New York State Collegiate Track and Field Conference Championship on Friday and Saturday. The freshman participated in the heptathlon, and set personal records in all seven events involved in the competition.
Cornelius finished Day 1 of the NYSCTC Championship, held at Ithaca College, in first place in the event and would go on to finish third after the second day of competition. The Deansboro native racked up 4,489 points, a finish that was strong enough to qualify him for next week’s ECAC Championship, held in New York City.
Cornelius finished in first in two of the seven events, winning the high jump and the long jump with distances of 1.87 meters and 6.53 meters, respectively.
On Friday, the Cardinals will travel to the Armory Track and Field Center in New York City, as qualifying athletes will compete in the ECAC Championship.
