St. John Fisher College’s Claire Walsh (Binghamton/Chenango Valley) of the women’s basketball team has been named as the College’s Female Athlete of the Week for the week ending January 20, 2013.
In a 62-50 win over Nazareth College on Tuesday, Walsh exploded for the game’s first 10 points, as her team opened with a 13-0 run over their Empire 8 rival. The freshman would go on to score 18 points in the contest, a career-high. In the opening minutes, Walsh shot 4-of-4 from the floor with two 3-pointers, helping pace her team to a 23-4 lead over the first 11 minutes. The guard scored 14 of her 18 points in the first half, matching the 20 minute total of the Golden Flyers.
On Friday, the Cardinals continued their impressive play, handing Ithaca College its first Empire 8 loss in a barn burner at Manning & Napier Varsity Gymnasium. The Cardinals came away with a 63-59 win over the Bombers, after Portia Velasco (Carondelet/Vallejo, CA) hit a go-ahead three pointer with 33 seconds to play. Walsh added four points, five rebounds and a steal in the win.
Fisher (7-10 overall, 4-4 Empire 8) will return to action Tuesday night, as the team travels to Alfred University to face the Saxons. The women’s game will be played at 8 p.m., with the men playing the earlier game at 6 p.m.
