St. John Fisher College’s Thad Wier (East Aurora/East Aurora), a junior on the men’s basketball team (8-5, 3-1 E8), has been named the College’s Male Athlete of the Week for the week ending January 6, 2013.
The Cardinals opened the week on Friday with an Empire 8 game against host Utica College. Wier shot 4-for-7 from the field, all coming behind the 3-point arc, finishing with the second-most points for Fisher in the 70-61 conference victory. The junior had a rebound and an assist in the outing, plus 12 points in just 15 minutes of floor time.
On Saturday, the Cardinals returned to action in another Empire 8 matchup, this time with rival Ithaca College. Fisher dropped a close 48-46 contest despite Wier’s best efforts. He started a 14-0 run in the first half that gave the Cardinals a 20-12 advantage with 3:40 remaining in the stanza. Wier scored the first eight points of the run, making a 3-pointer followed by two makes from the charity stripe before nailing another trey. For the second-straight day, Wier finished 4-for-7 from the 3-point line while grabbing five boards, distributing two assists and collecting two steals. With the two made free throws, Wier finished with a game-high 14 points in 23 minutes of playing time in the loss.
Wier and the Cardinals will return to action at 8 p.m. on Friday against Hartwick College in Oneonta.
