St. John Fisher College’s Kyle Metcalfe (Fairport/Fairport), a junior on the men’s soccer team, has been named the College’s Male Athlete of the Week for the week ending November 4, 2012.
On Friday, Metcalfe recorded a shutout against Ithaca College, as the two teams met in the Empire 8 semifinals. The clean slate was the sixth in the past seven games for Metcalfe, who upped his season total to eight overall. Despite the 0-0 score, the Cardinals eventually fell to the Bombers in a shutout that lasted 13 rounds.
With his third-consecutive shutout, Metcalfe has now played 323 minutes and 19 seconds in the goal without being scored on.
In 110 minutes of soccer, Metcalfe made five saves, including three in the second overtime period. Metcalfe also stopped a Bomber penalty attempt, which allowed the penalty kicks to extend well beyond the typical five rounds.
As of last week, Metcalfe ranked 22nd in the nation with an 85.9% save percentage. With Friday’s game averaged in, the junior now has a save percentage of 86.6%, which should move him up the list.
Friday’s loss knocked Fisher from the Empire 8 Championship, and the Cardinals will now wait to hear if they earn a bid to the ECAC Championship. The field will be announced Monday afternoon.
