Marissa Vedella (Iroquois/Elma) of the St. John Fisher College field hockey team has been named the College’s Female Athlete of the Week for the week ending October 14, 2012.
In a pivotal 1-0 week, Vedella led the Cardinals to a 2-1 victory against East Avenue rival Nazareth College on Wednesday. She accounted for both of Fisher’s goals, one in each half of the game.
Her first score came off a tap-in from teammate Elizabeth Cusack (Shenendehowa/Clifton Park) during the 26th minute of play. Vedella’s second goal of the day, the eventual game-winning goal, was scored unassisted in the 59th minute after a scramble in front of the net. She also led the Cardinals with three shots on the day.
The win keeps the team’s postseason hopes in tact. Although Fisher is finished with Empire 8 Conference play, depending on the outcomes of other conference matchups, they can still reach the Empire 8 Championship with some help.
For the season, Vedella leads Fisher with five goals and 11 points, including two game-winning goals.
The Cardinals will return to action Wednesday evening when they travel across town to take on University of Rochester at 6 p.m.
