Senior Austin Buckley (C.W. Baker/Baldwinsville) of the men’s soccer team has been named the College’s Male Athlete of the Week for the week ending September 30, 2012.
In a week which saw the Cardinals go 1-1, Buckley played a key role in the upset shutout of Empire 8 Conference foe Elmira College, who was the nation’s top scoring offense going into the game, tallying an assist on two of the three Fisher scores.
In the 20th minute, he deflected a ball in the penalty area which landed at the feet of teammate Josh Tomko (Cortland/Homer), who shot the ball into the lower right corner of the net to open the scoring.
Buckley wasn’t done yet though as he took the ball down the right sideline past an Elmira defender to the end line and crossed it to an open Jake Quattrini (Rome Free Academy/Ava) who touched it in for an insurance goal in the 70th minute.
With his two assists on Sunday, his team-leading season total now stands at four. The senior also took three shots each against Elmira and in a 2-0 loss to the University of Rochester earlier in the week, two of which were on goal.
Buckley and the Cardinals will return to action at 4 p.m. on Tuesday when they travel to St. Lawrence for a non-conference matchup.
