St. John Fisher College’s Elizabeth Cusack, a freshman on the field hockey team, has been named the College’s Female Athlete of the Week for the week ending September 23, 2012.
In 2-0 week for the Cardinals, adding to their current three-game win streak, Cusack loomed large in the team’s final game of the week, a 2-1 win over Empire 8 Conference opponent Washington & Jefferson College on Saturday afternoon in Washington, PA.
Cusack assisted on Fisher’s first goal of the game in the opening half, sending a pass to teammate Kailen Maynard, who was able to push the ball past the goalie.
The freshman then scored the eventual game-winning goal in the 67th minute, as she took an unassisted shot that found the back of the cage to put the Cardinals up for good.
Earlier in the week, Fisher defeated Wells College 1-0 when Liz Baldwin capitalized on a penalty stroke after Caitlin Allen was taken down inside the arc.
Cusack and the Cardinals will return to the field at 5 p.m. on Tuesday at St. Lawrence University, as they will try and extend its win streak and achieve the first .500 record (4-5) in program history. Fisher is currently above .500 in conference play (2-1).
