St. John Fisher College’s Joel Castellini, a sophomore on the men’s soccer team, has been named the College’s Male Athlete of the Week for the week ending September 23, 2012.
In a 2-1 week for the Cardinals, Castellini made his presence known in a 5-1 win over D’Youville College on Wednesday night at Growney Stadium. The sophomore scored two of the team’s five goals and assisted on another score.
Castellini scored his first goal in the 31st minute, when Austin Buckley rocketed a pass through the box from the top right corner, allowing the sophomore to put a goal past the keeper. Exactly two minutes later, Castellini was at it again, as Alex Stryker chased down a long outlet pass and sent a beautiful touch across to his teammate for Castellini's second score.
He was not done, however, sending a ball into the box in the 82nd minute to Jake Quattrini, who headed the goal home.
Fisher also won on Saturday at Utica College, picking up the Empire 8 victory in the first 25 second of overtime, as Quattrini scored the game-winner off a Garhett Varin pass.
The Cardinals and Castellini will return to action at 7 p.m. on Tuesday when they host crosstown rival University of Rochester.
