St. John Fisher College’s Danielle Famolaro (Rome Free Academy/Rome) of the field hockey team has been named as the College’s Female Athlete of the Week for the week ending September 9, 2012.
In a 1-2 week for the Cardinals, Famolaro’s outstanding play in the net helped get Fisher to its first win of the season. In Saturday’s non-conference matchup against Susquehanna University, Famolaro made a career-high 15 saves to lead Fisher to a 1-0 victory. The Cardinals’ lone goal was scored by forward Elizabeth Cusack (Shenendehowa/Clifton Park) in a game that saw Fisher outshot 27-4. However, Famolaro rose to the challenge, as she kept all shots out to preserve the shutout.
The Cardinals faced another on challenge on Sunday, hosting the visiting Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute Engineers. Famolaro made nine saves in the contest, including a 24-second span where she made a flurry of stops, five total, to keep the score even at 0-0. RPI would go on to win the game 4-0.
On Wednesday Fisher was beaten by The College at Brockport 2-0 on two late goals, with Famolaro picking up three saves in the game.
The freshman has totaled 48 saves on the year and holds a 73.8% save percentage.
Fisher will return to action at 4 p.m. on Tuesday when it opens Empire 8 play, hosting Houghton College at Growney Stadium.
