St. John Fisher College’s Tim Sylvester, a senior on the baseball team, has been named the College’s Male Athlete of the Week for the week ending April 29, 2012.
In a 5-0 week for the Cardinals, Sylvester picked up two victories, moving his record to 4-1 out of the bullpen this year, including three wins in each of his last three outings.
Sylvester relieved Cardinals ace Justin D’Amato with one out and the bases full in the third inning of Wednesday’s game at The College at Brockport. Fisher trailed 1-0 at the time, and Sylvester struck out two of the next three batters, allowing a walk to give the Golden Eagles a 2-0 lead. This, however, was the last time Brockport would cross the plate in the game. Sylvester worked six and two-thirds innings of shutout baseball, surrendering just three hits while striking out six.
Sylvester earned a win against Utica College in Empire 8 Conference play on Sunday afternoon. The game was a continuation of a suspended outing from Dugan Yard on April 1st, where Sylvester had thrown five innings without giving up an earned run before the game was called after the ninth.
Sylvester, nearly a month later, came out for the 10th and surrendered two earned runs to give the Pioneers a 5-3 lead. After supporting his teammates heavily in the past few games, the Cardinals returned the favor to their relief pitcher. With one out in the bottom of the 10th inning and trailing 5-4 with the bases loaded, teammate Sean Osterman blasted a shot over the left field fence for a walk-off Grand Slam and an 8-5 Sylvester win.
Last weekend, Sylvester entered a 5-5 contest with Ithaca College in the 10th inning and pitched a perfect inning, eventually gaining the win when Fisher walked off with a 6-5 victory in the bottom of that inning.
Fisher returns to action at 4 p.m. on Wednesday as it plays host to former Empire 8 foe Rochester Institute of Technology in a single nine-inning game.
