St. John Fisher College’s Mitch Ritchie, a senior on the men’s lacrosse team, has been named the College’s Male Athlete of the Week for the week ending March 25, 2012. He was also named the Empire 8 Conference’s Player of the Week.
In a 2-0 week for the Cardinals, Ritchie scored eight goals and dished out seven assists while collecting six ground balls. His nine-point performance against SUNY Oneonta fell just one point shy of tying a Fisher lacrosse single-game record.
The first game of the week pinned the Cardinals against Lycoming College on Wednesday afternoon in Growney Stadium. Fisher won the matchup 14-9 behind Ritchie’s three goals and three assists. The senior also collected all six of his ground balls for the week against Lycoming.
Saturday afternoon saw the Cardinals play host to SUNY Oneonta, a game in which Fisher controlled from the first faceoff all the way through its 16-7 victory. Ritchie again was pivotal, scoring four of the Cardinals’ first six goals, all in the first quarter. He finished the day with five goals and four assists to help defeat the visiting Red Dragons.
The Brockport native has started in all five games for the Cardinals, leading the team in goals (14) and points (29) while being tied for assists (15) with classmate Connor Henderson.
Ritchie and the Cardinals will return to action at 4 p.m. on Wednesday when they travel to face SUNY Geneseo.
