St. John Fisher College’s Kayla Goodberlet (Bishop Ready/Columbus, OH), a junior on the softball team, has been named the College’s Female Athlete of the Week for the week ending March 4, 2012.
In a 2-2 opening week for the Cardinals, Goodberlet registered five hits and five RBI for a .445 batting average. The third baseman also scored a run of her own in Fisher’s first game of the season.
On Saturday, Goodberlet helped the Cardinals go 2-0 in their first games at the Tucson Invitational in Tucson, Ariz. In game one of the day, a 7-4 win over Chapman University, Goodberlet registered a hit and an RBI while drawing two bases on balls.
The junior was instrumental in Fisher’s second win of the day, as she knocked in a game-high four runs to help the Cardinals defeat Milwaukee School of Engineering in five innings. The 9-1 victory saw a .833 batting average for Goodberlet, who was the designated player in the contest.
Goodberlet also played in Sunday’s two losses to Coe College, 5-0 and 3-2 defeats in games one and two, respectively. While the Cardinals only mustered one hit as a team in game one, Goodberlet provided a sacrifice bunt in game two that moved a Fisher runner into scoring position.
On the field, the junior compiled four putouts and three assists in her three appearances at third base.
Fisher will continue to play in the Tucson Invitational, as they face Coe College again on Monday at 11 a.m. (EST). The Cardinals will also play at 1 p.m. against Loras College.
