St. John Fisher College’s Sydney Bloomstein (Millbury Memorial/Millbury, MA), a freshman on the women’s basketball team, has been named the College’s Female Athlete of the Week for the week ending February 12, 2012.
Bloomstein hit a big shot on Saturday afternoon in Manning & Napier Varsity Gymnasium for what amounted to a tough loss against Empire 8 Conference leading Hartwick College. With Fisher trailing 65-62 with under a minute remaining, Portia Velasco got a shot off that Camaryn Buckner was able to corral and dish out to Bloomstein. The freshman let it fly from beyond the arc and drilled a clutch three to knot the game at 65-65. Her shot pushed the game into overtime, but the Hawks were able to pull away in the extra period, winning 81-72. Bloomstein finished with six points, two assists and a block in the game while leading the team with 41 minutes played.
Friday night pinned the Cardinals against the Stevens Institute of Technology Ducks in a battle for seeding in the conference tournament. Despite losing to its opponent 65-55 that night, Fisher earned a berth in the Empire 8 Championship with Hartwick defeating Nazareth College. Bloomstein played a solid game in the effort, netting 15 points on 6-for-13 shooting, including 3-for-6 from the 3-point line. She also grabbed five rebounds, dished out two assists and turned away one shot while leading the Cardinals with 35 minutes on the floor.
Fisher will close out the regular season at 6 p.m. next Saturday as it hosts East Ave Rival Nazareth. The Cardinals will play either Ithaca College or Hartwick in the Empire 8 Conference Championship the following weekend.
