St. John Fisher College’s Portia Velasco (Carondelet/Vallejo, Calif.) of the women’s basketball team has been named the College’s Female Athlete of the Week for the week ending November 27, 2011.
Velasco was also recognized as the Empire 8 Conference’s Female Player of the Week.
Velasco helped lead the Cardinals to a 2-0 week, earning both victories at the Woodcliff Hotel & Spa Invitational. She scored a career-high 21 points in Friday's 76-67 win over the University of Pittsburgh-Bradford while adding seven assists and four steals in the effort.
On Sunday, Velasco again led the Cardinals in scoring, this time adding 14 points in a 61-45 victory over Union College. The freshman guard also contributed five assists and four steals in the win. In a 20-7 run that pulled Fisher away for good, Velasco contributed on 11 of the Cardinals’ points, scoring her seven second half points in the span and also assisting on four.
After the two-straight victories, Fisher is now 2-2 on the season. The Cardinals will play next at 6 p.m. on Tuesday when they take on the Rochester Institute of Technology at Nazareth College in first-round action of the 46th Annual Wendy’s College Classic.
