St. John Fisher College’s
Sarah Stefanon of the softball team has been named the College’s Female Athlete of the Week for the week ending May 15, 2011.
The Cardinals, who advanced to the NCAA Division III Regional Championships at Ithaca after winning the Empire 8 Conference for the third time in the past four years, went 2-2 in NCAA Action Thursday-Saturday of this past week.
Stefanon pitched three complete games, highlighted by a 14-inning, 9-5 win over Middlebury in an elimination game on Saturday. The sophomore pitcher was dominant from the mound over the course of all three games, allowing only six runs in 28.0 innings pitched and retiring 23 batters.
In Thursday’s round one shutout over Western Connecticut State,
Stefanon allowed only two hits over seven innings, striking out seven.
In Friday’s 1-0 loss to top-seeded Messiah, the Perry native scattered six hits in the game and fanned five batters.
In Saturday’s first game against Middlebury,
Stefanon did not falter in the 14 innings, controlling the game from the mound to defeat the Panthers and remain in the tournament. The sophomore dispersed only five hits and recorded 11 strike outs in the complete game effort.
For the season,
Stefanon collected a 15-5 record, ranking her among Fisher’s top-ten for wins in a single-season. The sophomore tallied a team-best 1.88 ERA, pitching a Conference-best 145.0 innings in 18 complete games over 23 appearances.
