St. John Fisher College’s Mitch Bailey (McQuaid Jesuit/Fairport) of the men’s lacrosse team has been tabbed as the College’s Male Athlete of the Week for the week ending April 24, 2011.
In a 1-1 week for the Cardinals, Bailey did an outstanding job of shutting down two of the Empire 8 Conference’s top scorers.
On Wednesday, the junior defenseman led Fisher with seven ground balls in a 10-9 overtime-loss to Nazareth College. Bailey was responsible for marking Nazareth All-American Joe Jacobs-Ferderbar, who entered the game as Nazareth’s leader in points, and didn’t allow him to register a goal or an assist.
In Saturday’s 16-7 win over Alfred University, Bailey defended Alfred’s Marc Zoyhofski, who entered the game leading the Empire 8 in points with just under 5.0 per game, and held him to just one goal and one assist. The junior finished the game with three ground balls and two caused turnovers.
For the season, Bailey has started in all 13 games he’s played in and ranks among the team leaders in ground balls and caused turnovers.
Fisher (10-4) will return to action at 1 p.m. on Saturday at Utica College.
