St. John Fisher College has selected #Lauren Glavin# of the women’s lacrosse team as the College’s Female Athlete of the Week for the week ending May 9, 2009.

Glavin led the Cardinals to the second round of the NCAA Division III Championship for the first time in program history, as Fisher defeated The College of Wooster on Wednesday, before suffering a season-ending loss to Tufts University on Saturday.  For the week, the junior registered 13 points on nine goals and four assists (all team highs).

The Cardinals, who trailed by as many as eight goals midway through the second half against Tufts in the second round, ended the game with 9-3 run, including two goals in the final 40 seconds.  The run fell just short however as Tufts advanced with a 20-18 win over Fisher.  Glavin led the Cardinals with eight points on five goals and three assists.  The two teams played to a 6-5 Tufts advantage with just 3:22 left in the first half, Tufts began to pull away, however, late in the first half. The Jumbos scored with 1:47 left in the half to take a 7-5 lead, and after Glavin was sent off for three minutes with a yellow card with 33 seconds remaining in the opening half, Tufts scored two goals in the final 30 seconds to take a 9-5 lead at the break.  With Glavin off the field, Tufts scored three goals in the opening 2:27 of the second half to take a 12-5 lead, capping a 6-0 run by the Jumbos.  Fisher cut the margin to four goals on three different occasions over the final 10 minutes and pulled to within three goals with 40 seconds left and to within two on a score with just 28.6 seconds, but the Cardinals never regained possession.

The Cardinals started slowly in the 17-12 opening round win over Wooster, but pulled away in the second half for the win.  Wooster jumped out to 2-0 lead after the opening five minutes and led 4-1 midway through the first half. The Cardinals, however, scored four straight goals in a 5:22 span and led 5-4 with 9:41 left. Wooster regained the lead with 3:51 left on a free position goal, making it 7-6, but Fisher answered with two goals in the final minute to take an 8-7 lead into the halftime break.  Wooster tied the game at 8 and 9, and saw Fisher’s lead grow to 12-10 before the Cardinals sealed the win with a 5-1 scoring run down the stretch.   The midfielder finished the game with five points on four goals and one assist.

Glavin finished the year with 51 goals, 27 assists and 78 points, all of which are single-season records.  For her career, she ranks first at Fisher in assists (60) and second in both goals (139) and points (199).
