St. John Fisher College has named #Vicki Sahm# of the women’s lacrosse team as the College’s Female Athlete of the Week for the week ending April 20, 2009.

A junior goalie, Sahm stopped 39 shots, including a career-high 23 saves between the pipes in a 2-1 week for the Cardinals. She played all 180 minutes and posted a 9.33 goals-against average in the three games.

Sahm opened the week with a 10-save outing in Fisher’s 16-5 drubbing of visiting SUNY Geneseo. The Blue Knights took a 3-1 lead with 17:25 left in the first half, but the Cardinals scored the final eight goals of the first half to take a 9-3 at intermission. Seven of the eight goals came in a nine minute span, and six different Cardinals scored over the final 17:14, as Fisher pushed its lead to 11 goals.

In the next game, versus nationally-ranked Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, NJ, Sahm made a career-high 23 saves, but it wasn’t enough as the Ducks earned a 17-14 win. The Cardinals, who trailed by as many as four goals in the game, pulled to within two on four separate occasions in the first half, but failed to get any closer as Stevens pulled away with three unanswered goals over a three-minute span midway through the second half to fend off the Cardinals.

Sahm and the Cardinals rebounded however, picking up a 18-5 win over host Hartwick College to close out the week. The Cardinals took the lead for good just 15 seconds into the game, and cruised to a 13-2 advantage at the intermission. An active Fisher defense that forced 23 Hartwick turnovers made light work for Sahm, who made six saves in the win – five of which came in the second half.

For the season, Sahm has played all 780 minutes in goal, making 175 saves with a 10.58 GAA and .571 save percentage.

Fisher (7-6 overall, 4-3 Empire 8) has won four of its last five games, and will host Utica College at 1 p.m. on Saturday in the final game of the regular season.
