St. John Fisher College has named #Jon Cortina# of the men’s lacrosse team as the College’s Male Athlete of the week for the week ending April 12, 2009.
In a 2-0 week for the Cardinals, Cortina played all but 3:21 of a possible 120 minutes in the net, collecting a combined 20 saves. Fisher improved to 11-2 on the year with the two victories and continues to receive votes in the USILA poll. The Cardinals have placed 26th for the week beginning April 13, 2009.
Wednesday’s game against evenly-matched host R.I.T., who is also receiving votes in the USILA poll, featured a narrow 12-11 win for the Cardinals. The junior goalie stopped 11 shots in the game, including four in the fourth quarter. On Saturday, Fisher traveled to Keuka College for a non-conference matchup. In a low-scoring affair, the Cardinals escaped with a 6-4 win, powered by Cortina’s nine saves.
On the season, the Binghamton-native has saved 126 shots while earning a .609 save percentage. Cortina has given up few goals this year, obtaining a 7.54 goals against average.
Fisher returns to action at 4 p.m. on Wednesday when it hosts East-Ave rival Nazareth College.
