St. John Fisher College has named #Mary Kate Comfort# of the women’s basketball team as the College’s Female Athlete of the Week for the week ending February 8, 2009.
Comfort averaged a double-double with 13 points and 11.5 rebounds in a 2-0 week for the Cardinals.
Fisher began the week with a key Conference win, posting a 78-60 victory over the Empire 8 –leading Ithaca College Bombers. After a 21-21 tie, Fisher took the lead for good with just under five minutes to play in the first half. The Cardinals enjoyed a six-point lead following five unanswered points going into the half, and built a 10-point lead following a layup from Comfort early in the second period. Ithaca trimmed the lead to three on three separate occasions, but got no closer as the Cardinals secured the win. Comfort totaled 11 points, nine rebounds, three blocks and three assists in the win.
The junior center continued her strong play against East Avenue-rival Nazareth College. With 15 points and 14 rebounds, Comfort collected her third double-double of the season and the 11th of her career. The Cardinals opened the game on a 10-0 scoring run, and opened up the final period on a 16-5 advantage to take a 46-35 lead with eight minutes to play in the game. Both runs featured at least two baskets by Comfort.
For the season, Comfort averages 10.7 points and a team-best 7.3 rebounds per game. She leads the team in blocked shots (23) and also ranks among the team leaders with 17 assists and 14 steals.
Fisher (13-7 overall, 6-5 Empire 8) will take on Rochester Institute of Technology at 6 p.m. on Tuesday.
