St. John Fisher College has named #Colleen Maloney# of the women’s basketball team as the College’s Female Athlete of the Week for the week ending January 25, 2009.
In a 1-2 week for the Cardinals, Maloney averaged a team-high 12.7 points, and ranked second on the squad with 5.0 rebounds and six steals.
After an 11 point, four rebound effort off the bench in Fisher’s dominating 62-36 win over host Cazenovia on Tuesday, the sophomore guard/forward came alive in an Empire 8 Conference matchup with Alfred University.
Maloney hit all three of her 3-point shots and was 6-for-7 from the field, en route to 18 points, five rebounds and two steals, but it wasn’t enough as the Saxons took control with a 10-2 run down the stretch. After trailing by as many as 10 in the second half, Maloney’s third triple of the game brought the Cardinals to within four, but an 8-for-21 outing from the free throw line in the final period held the Cardinals back and Alfred recorded a 68-57 win.
Maloney cooled off in Fisher’s 61-59 loss to Nazareth College to end the week, but still finished with nine points, including the game-tying basket with just 14 seconds to play. Fisher trailed by eight with four minutes remaining but the Cardinals came surging back with a 8-4 run with time running low to pull to within two. On the next Nazareth possession, Maloney came up with a key steal, and finished the run with a right-handed floater in the lane to tie the score. The Golden Flyers drew a foul on their next possession and sank both free throws with four seconds showing to take the win.
For the season, Maloney leads the team with 10-.6 points per game and 19 made 3-pointer on the year.
Fisher (10-6 overall, 3-4 Empire 8) will take on Hartwick College and Stevens Institute of Technology in a pair of Empire 8 Conference games on Friday and Sunday, respectively.
